Description

To support clients who, because of Mental Health problems, require an advocate to access the support they need. This will ensure that clients have greater choice and control over their lives, both now and in the future.

Supporting clients on wards and in the community, to empower and enable them to express their individual needs, rights and choices.

Ensure clients have access to information which is presented in an appropriate manner for their individual needs.

Organisation Description

SWAN is a charity, founded in 1999, working throughout Somerset, Wiltshire, BaNES and South Gloucestershire.

To date we have assisted over 11,000 people to improve their lives in some small or large way.

SWAN provides Advocacy services to those in society who need help to speak up for themselves. they enable people to get access to the services that they are entitled to, and to make a complaint when things are not as they should be.

Skills and Qualifications

Requirements

We are looking for people with effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Organisational and planning skills, including time and resource management.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and also as part of a team.
Ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding of people who have different life experiences and expectations.
Ability to keep accurate records, both electronic and written.
Some experience in the field of mental health is preferred.


Benefits

Volunteers will gain experience in working with people with mental health problems; both in the community and within hospital environments. Volunteers will have support and guidance from experienced advocates, and will alongside like minded people; building on teamwork and using their own initiative.
