One Sunday afternoon (3-4 hours) per month
To pick up one or two elderly people just once a month, and together go to a tea party in a local family home. Most of the elderly have walking, hearing or poor eyesight or other difficulties/disabilities. They are isolated and lonely and the opportunity to go to a tea party is greatly valued.
As a driver you have the chance to really make a difference - without you the parties could not happen as you bring the guests. You are an integral part of the group and of course, stay for tea, cake and lots of chat and laughter with the other guests and volunteers.
Drivers are needed in Weston super Mare and across North Somerset
Mission - To relieve the acute loneliness of elderly housebound people living alone, by taking them on a monthly outing to tea, using small local volunteer based groups.
Contact the Elderly is a national charity established in 1965, and is still based on the same simple yet effective idea of helping to alleviate the social isolation and loneliness experience by frail elderly people that live alone without family and friends nearby.
What do we do? Alleviate loneliness
Who do we help? Isolated people over 75
When do we help? Sundays - the loneliest day
It works through a network of small monthly friendship groups with volunteer hosts, drivers and coordinators. One Sunday a month each small group of drivers picks up the same small group of elderly guests and together they go to a host's house for a simple tea party and social afternoon.
On average a group consists of one Group Coordinator (who is the main point of contact for the group and pulls together the monthly rota), 6 - 12 hosts, 3 - 6 drivers and about 8 elderly members.
We currently have three groups in Weston-super-Mare, two in Portishead and one in the Yeo area covering Yatton, Nailsea etc. We are always in need of new volunteers, especially reserve drivers who can help from time to time without much commitment.
Driving licence and own car or access to a vehicle. Kind, sensible and able to take responsibility.
|Induction:||Detailed literature; discussion with development officer, trial outing for drivers if wanted, ongoing support|
