Volunteer Couples

The Students Exploring Marriage Trust (Explore)

Name: Volunteer Couples
Organisation: The Students Exploring Marriage Trust (Explore)
Location:
Type: Part Time
This role is suitable for flexible volunteering. We may only require the volunteer couple once per academic term, or maybe a couple of times for an hour or two only. Most of the work we do is during the day, so daytime availability is essential.

Description

We want to share what it takes to create and sustain positive, long-lasting relationships with young people, and we are looking for happy, imperfect couples to tell their story.

Do you want to…
- Prove great relationships exist?
- Show that you don’t have to be perfect to be in a happy relationship?
- Help young people create more stable, more loving, more caring relationships for themselves in the future?

Explore is a relationships education charity, set up in 2000. We deliver sessions in schools for 14-17 year olds to help them discuss, evaluate and explore the life skills needed for long-term, healthy relationships. Through our sessions, young people are able to challenge media stereotypes about relationships, and any negative experiences of their own, to gain self-awareness, confidence, understanding and hope for their own future happiness. We apply the principle of learning by experience, where young people lead their own open dialogue to investigate the relationships of ordinary couples who, in response, offer experiences from their own relationship. Our young people are prepared and supported to draw conclusions from these dialogues.

Requirements

What we are looking for
We are seeking all types of volunteer couples (married, cohabiting, opposite or same sex, civil partnered, etc) to join us for our healthy relationship sessions with young people. As a volunteer couple, you will spend time together with groups of up to 30 young people in classrooms and youth clubs where you will answer their questions about experiences within your own relationship. We are not looking for the "perfect couple" - in fact, we have found that young people respond best to couples who have faced and worked through challenges together, who are prepared to share what they have learnt and are open, honest and, most importantly, authentic.

Requirements of this volunteering opportunity:
- You will be able to relate to, and engage with, young people
- You will be patient, a good listener, articulate, able to be open and honest, and have a good sense of humour
- You will be fully briefed but not trained, as we want couples to speak from the heart about their own experiences
- All Explore volunteers are required to complete a full DBS check.

Benefits

You will gain experience of working with young people in a class room or youth work setting. You will get as much out of this role as you put in and often volunteer couples stay with us for many years or even decades! You will meet other volunteers and feel part of the Explore team, and we are always happy to offer a reference.
