Description

Can you spare a few hours a month to help out at one of our daytime or evening social events?

North Somerset People First are a self-advocacy charity based in Worle, but our services cover all of North Somerset. Anyone aged over 16 with a learning disability living, working or going to college in North Somerset can become a member for free. Our aim is to promote and encourage people to develop the skills and confidence to speak up for themselves, reduce social isolation and give people the tools and experience to take greater control of their lives.

We are currently looking to recruit volunteers to join our Social Committee. The role of the Social Committee will be to actively engage and attract NSPF members to a range of social events held throughout the year. The Social Committee’s role is to use creativity and passion to ensure a social element is maintained within NSPF’s culture and that our members can form lasting relationships and make happy memories at our social events.

Role description
We are looking for proactive and organised individuals who are happy to work on their own initiative. You will need to have a friendly personality with good communication skills and be willing to help members to feel welcome and comfortable when attending these social activities.

We aim to offer an evening social event once every six weeks and would welcome help to run these. The events could include disco nights, skittles evenings, pub trips, theatre/cinema etc. We also have regular daytime activities: including Friendship Groups in Weston and Clevedon and a monthly Walking Group. We are looking for people to assist in the running of these groups as well as our evening events.

As a small and local team with limited funds, we rely on the support of our volunteers to help organise and develop the ideas our members. Some of the activities our members have suggested include: Theatre trips, boat trips, hiking, paint-balling, arts and crafts etc. Can you help us to make these events happen?

List of possible tasks involved in this role:
• Planning and coordinating social events in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator. This includes: researching and booking venues, organising catering and entertainment.
• Attending the events and interacting with our members, helping to make the events feel welcoming and inclusive.
• Preparation of promotional materials eg flyers, posters, tickets
• Helping to set up rooms prior to events and clearing up afterwards
• Handling member’s enquiries and trouble-shooting during events to help ensure all runs smoothly
• Helping members to access appropriate transport home from the venue at the end of the event
