Contact The Elderly

Name: Coordinator/Administrator
Organisation: Contact The Elderly
Location: C/O VANS, Weston Court, Oldmixon Crescent, Weston super Mare, North Somerset, BS23 2EP
Type: Part Time
A few hours per month

The co-ordinator arranges the monthly outings, re-booking the annual host schedule and is the main contact for the group's volunteer drivers and hosts. The co-ordinator welcomes new volunteers into the group, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities. Co-ordinators also meet and assess new older members prior to them joining the group. You will be supported by your Regional Development Officer who in turn liaises with the Contact the Elderly National Office. Being a group co-ordinator means you spend a few hours each month organising the tea party. This involves making sure the host knows how many will be attending, the drivers are aware of date, time and which older people they will be collecting, and ensuring the older members know who is collecting them.

On a yearly basis, you will contact the group's hosts and pre book future tea party's, passing the schedule on to your group members.

Being a group co-ordinator for Contact the Elderly is a fulfilling and enjoyable role. Just a few hours a month from you can make all the difference to the lives of lonely other people.

Coordinators are needed in Weston super Mare and across North Somerset.

Organisation Description

Mission - To relieve the acute loneliness of elderly housebound people living alone, by taking them on a monthly outing to tea, using small local volunteer based groups.

Contact the Elderly is a national charity established in 1965, and is still based on the same simple yet effective idea of helping to alleviate the social isolation and loneliness experience by frail elderly people that live alone without family and friends nearby.

What do we do? Alleviate loneliness
Who do we help? Isolated people over 75
When do we help? Sundays - the loneliest day

It works through a network of small monthly friendship groups with volunteer hosts, drivers and coordinators. One Sunday a month each small group of drivers picks up the same small group of elderly guests and together they go to a host's house for a simple tea party and social afternoon.

On average a group consists of one Group Coordinator (who is the main point of contact for the group and pulls together the monthly rota), 6 - 12 hosts, 3 - 6 drivers and about 8 elderly members.

We currently have three groups in Weston-super-Mare, two in Portishead and one in the Yeo area covering Yatton, Nailsea etc. We are always in need of new volunteers, especially reserve drivers who can help from time to time without much commitment.
